Alternative budgets will be presented on the floor of the House of Representatives, in response to that put forward March 20 by Paul Ryan and Republican members of the House Budget Committee.
One of these, by the Republican Study Committee (RSC) would create even greater harm to the social safety net than the Ryan Budget. Others being presented by the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus and the Democratic members of the Budget Committee – and Priorities for a Faithful Federal Budget (Washington Interfaith Staff Coalition) will also be discussed on the floor in the next several days. None of the latter are expected to be allowed, by the majority, to come to a vote.
The chart below is an attempt to draw some relationship across the budgets that will be considered by the House of Representatives, illustrating the contrasts across budget priorities. Some documents include listings of actual amounts by budget category, others speak to priorities.
NETWORK supports the direction of the CBC, CPC, Democratic Budget and the Faithful Budget. We strongly oppose the movement of both the Ryan Budget and that of the Republican Study Committee and view them as disastrous to our communities, particularly to those persons who are most vulnerable.
