Pilgrimage to the U.S. Capitol in Support of the Unemployed

Date:
Wed, 2014-06-11 13:30 - 15:00

A Pilgrimage in Support of the Unemployed

When:  June 11, 1:30 p.m. following Witness Wednesday (12:30 – 1:15)

Where:  The House Triangle at Independence and New Jersey, at the Capitol

Why: Members of Congress refuse to be touched by the suffering of their constituents.

2.8 million workers lost benefits on Dec. 28, 2013, and are still without support

Members of the faith community will raise the voices of the unemployed who have lost support due to the House of Representatives’ unwillingness to consider the Extended Unemployment Compensation bill passed in the Senate last December. We will read stories from those who are suffering, losing homes and other possessions, getting by on SNAP (food stamps) and donations, and struggling to find money for transportation to job interviews. These people are steadily seeking jobs. Yet, there are still 10s to 100s of seekers for each available job, and often there is not a good match of skills with available work.

Hundreds of people from across the nation have shared the stories of how they are surviving – often feeling they are not succeeding, feeling they are forgotten. They are anxious for their stories to be heard – particularly by their own legislators. So, we will visit the offices of many members who show no concern for the plight of these people, sharing stories from their own districts. And, as we move from office to office, we will read aloud other stories.

Our intent is to raise the consciousness – and prick the consciences – of those legislators who will not consider providing and extension to these benefits. This is particularly poignant as many of these same legislators have been voting to continue spending billions of dollars through tax loopholes benefitting corporations and very wealthy Americans.
