How do immigrants contribute to American innovation?

A 2007 study by professors from Duke University and University of California-Berkeley indicated that a quarter of all American technological and engineering companies created in the last decade had at least one foreign-born founder. These companies produced over $52 billion in sales and employed close to half a million people.  Despite the proven success of immigrants in the United States, green cards will only be awarded to 12% of the nearly one million applicants in a given year.
