Urge Candidates to Attend and Hear Stories of People Struggling at the Margins of Society and the Programs that Help Them
(Cincinnati, OH) -- On October 10 at 10:30a.m EDT, NETWORK will host “Nuns on the Bus: Listening to ‘We the People'” in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sr. Simone Campbell, SSS and fellow Catholic sisters will take part in a forum with individuals they met during the original nine-state tour who are working hard to overcome the challenges of poverty and place themselves on the road to self-sufficiency.
The nuns have invited both Democratic and Republican presidential and Senate candidates to take part in this important discussion and stand with those on the economic margins of our society.
“As Catholic sisters, we are called to give special attention to the needs of those facing poverty, and we think our elected leaders need to do the same. This is an opportunity for those who wish to represent us to hear the stories of hardship and hope that we heard on the bus,” said Sr. Simone Campbell, SSS of NETWORK and organizer of the original “Nuns on the Bus” tour. “Shamefully, some politicians have referred to those who receive assistance from the government as ‘lazy’ and ‘dependent;’ nothing could be further from the truth. We hope that highlighting these stories will provide witness to the reality of poverty in America and the need for a strong social safety net.”
“We are thrilled to host the ‘Nuns on the Bus,’” said S. Barbara Busch, SC, executive director of Working In Neighborhoods. “Every day at WIN, we see hard-working families and senior citizens who are trying to keep a roof over their heads and improve their communities. We know that good government is the key to ensuring equal access to housing, healthcare, education and nutrition that benefits our entire community. “
The conversation will be moderated by Sr. Campbell and will bring together stories from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio related to healthcare, hunger, housing, and economic fairness. Immediately following the “Nuns on the Bus: Listening to ‘We the People’” event, local Ohio Catholic Sisters will depart on a nine-city Ohio tour to visit Catholic-sponsored social service agencies that would be harmed by federal budget cuts and will call for Democrats and Republicans to support a faithful budget that affirms the life of all God's children -- not just the wealthiest few.
