Washington DC: NETWORK, A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, celebrates today’s Senate vote ratifying the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). Having actively worked for this important legislation for some time (including our recent sponsoring of a conference call with Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller, the lead negotiator for New START), we are elated that the Senate voted its support by such a wide margin (71-26). Sister Simone Campbell, NETWORK’s Executive Director, commented: “This bipartisan vote gives us hope during this Christmas season that our nation is headed in the right direction with regard to nuclear weapons. This is an important step toward a more peaceful tomorrow, and we thank the U.S. Senate.”
NETWORK—a Catholic leader in the global movement for justice and peace—educates, organizes and lobbies for economic and social transformation. Founded in 1971 by 47 Catholic sisters, NETWORK is supported by thousands of groups and individuals committed to working for social and economic justice.
