With five loaves and two fishes in our midst, Secretary Vilsack met with 21 faith leaders, ministers from the around the country and from D.C. faith-based advocacy groups. He retold the story, related in Matthew 14, of the crowd at Jesus’s feet risking to share what they had with those beyond their own family – a miracle which allowed all to be fed, with abundance left over. In this time of economic insecurity for many in our midst, the Secretary challenged church leaders to help their members to trust, to risk our resources, and to ensure that children have sufficient nutrition to grow to healthy, productive members of our communities.
A current practical way to do this is to push legislators to fully fund the reauthorization of the child nutrition programs, even risking an increase to the federal deficit. Too many children are now living with serious resource deficit which inhibits their learning and healthy growth.
