NETWORK Deplores Senate Vote on DREAM

Sister Simone Campbell, NETWORK’s Executive Director, issued the following statement after the 55 to 41 vote on December 18: “The Senate’s vote to block passage of the DREAM Act raised bullying behavior to a new level in our nation. By targeting children who were brought to the U.S. by their undocumented immigrant parents and by denying those children the opportunity to earn citizenship through hard work and sacrifice, legislators have embarrassed themselves and our nation..." On December 8, 2010, during a debate on the DREAM Act, Senator Durbin announced on the Senate floor, “If you or I were driving down the highway and speeding, pulled over by a policeman, given a ticket, we’d understand it. But if they also gave a ticket to your young daughter in the backseat, you’d say, ‘that’s not fair, she wasn’t driving.' These children [the dreamers] were not driving!” Read more
