Unemployment Insurance

With an extremely volatile economy and massive job loss as a result of the recession, unemployment insurance (UI) has become vital to families across the country. Millions of workers have lost their jobs and turned to unemployment insurance to help take care of their families.

Poverty Rates

NETWORK strongly supports legislation designed to help people lift themselves out of poverty and live lives of dignity. This includes lobbying for “safety-net” programs such as nutrition assistance

Green Jobs

NETWORK strongly supports individual, corporate and government actions that help support (or renew) healthy ecosystems.  In this critical time of energy resource management and of severe unemployment and underemployment, NETWORK urges a greater emphasis on “green” jobs in energy production and construction.

Alternative energy sources such as geothermal, wind and solar are becoming more accessible. The U.S.-based production of equipment and supplies for green energy will create needed jobs while helping the environment.

Wage Theft

NETWORK believes that all workers deserve the wages they’ve earned, and although wage theft occurs in almost every sector of the workforce, it often goes unnoticed and unrecognized. Wage theft is the illegal underpayment or non-payment of workers wages. The most common forms of wage theft are not paying minimum wage, not paying overtime, requiring workers to work off the clock, refusing to pay workers’ final paychecks, misclassifying employees as independent contracts to avoid paying minimum wage and overtime, not paying for breaks as required by state laws, and stealing tips.

Paid Sick Leave

NETWORK believes in policies that promote a healthy work environment and allow workers to balance the responsibility of work and families. Despite the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) passed in 1993 and amended in 2008, family and personal sick leave remain nonexistent to many working Americans. Because the majority of primary care givers are still women, this problem disproportionately affects them, 47% of whom have no paid sick days (Institute for Women’s Policy Research).
